2012 Young Artist Competition Winners





Angelica Pereira was born in Cartagena, Colombia beginning her musical studies at the age of seven. She enrolled at the Conservatorio de Musica at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogota. Later she received a full tuition scholarship to the Conservatory, and after two years of undergraduate studies with Maestro Eduardo Berrio, she was admitted to Oklahoma City University in the fall of 2008, again with a full tuition scholarship.

With memberships in the Phi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society and Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, Angelica won several more awards and scholarships. While participating in violin master classes, she has worked with maestros Midori, Philippe Quint and Li Zhe, to name a few.

Angelica was awarded first prize in the instrumental division in the Ladies Music Club of Oklahoma City Competition in March of 2010. In the summer of 2010 Angelica was concertmaster of "Opera in the Ozarks" in Eureka Springs, AR. In January, 2012 she toured China with the Youth Orchestra of the Americas. She is currently a senior at Oklahoma City University in the studio of Sam Formicola. She is also a member of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic.




Christopher Dorst

An Oklahoma City area native, Chris is currently in his third year as an undergraduate percussionist at the University of Oklahoma, placing 1st in the Undergraduate Concerto Competition. During his time at OU he has been a member of the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Percussion Orchestra, OU Steel Band, and various chamber ensembles. He has studied under Dr. Lance Drege, Dr. Ricardo Sousa, Dr. Nathan Daughtrey, and Michael Coleman.

Outside of the classical realm, Chris has also been actively involved in the marching arts as both a performer for the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps for four years and as an educator. At the Troopers, Chris toured the country for 4 summers as a tenor drummer and was a section leader for the percussion ensemble during two of those seasons. During this time, he studied drumming extensively with Brian Stevens, Kevin Welborn, Chris Lawlor, Matt Ramey, David Reeves, Ralph Hardimon, and Jeff Queen among others.

As an educator, Chris currently serves as percussion coordinator for Southmoore High School in Moore, OK where he has taught the marching band and various percussion ensembles for the past four years. He has also written for and instructed several other schools in the Oklahoma City area, served as an instructor at the Norman Music Institute, as well as serve as an instructor for the Resistance Indoor Percussion ensemble.
